Tigers on Fire

October 10, 2024

DETROIT -- Riley Greene, Matt Vierling and Spencer Torkelson each drove in a run and six pitchers combined on a second straight shutout Wednesday to give the Detroit Tigers a 3-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 3 of the American League Division Series (ALDS).

The Tigers now hold a commanding 2-1 lead in the series as the Guardians were left reeling from back-to-back shutouts. The dominating performance marked the first time the Tigers have recorded consecutive postseason shutouts since 1907, during their World Series championship season.

The six pitchers, consisting of starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez and five relievers, kept the Guardians' lineup in check, limiting them to just five hits on the night. This combined effort on the mound proved to be too much for the Guardians, as they were unable to score against the Tigers' pitching staff for the second consecutive game.

On the other side of the field, the Tigers' offense was more than enough to secure the win. Riley Greene, Matt Vierling, and Spencer Torkelson all delivered key RBIs in the 3-0 victory. Each of these players' contributions helped propel the Tigers to the win and take the driver's seat in the ALDS.

The win marks a huge milestone for the Tigers, but the team recognizes that they still have a lot of work to do in order to secure the series and move on to the American League Championship Series (ALCS). As the series shifts back to Cleveland, the Tigers will look to finish off the Guardians and complete their journey to the ALCS.

Game 4 of the ALDS will be played on Thursday, where the Tigers will try to put the finishing touches on their thrilling postseason run so far. If the Tigers manage to win the game, they would be advancing to the ALCS for the first time in over a decade and making a significant step towards their ultimate goal: winning the World Series.
