Manchester City expert Steven McInerney has sparked a heated debate over the future of veteran right-back Kyle Walker, questioning whether the Citizens should have parted ways with the 34-year-old a year ago. As Walker's performances continue to decline, many are now calling for Pep Guardiola to invest in a new right-back to steer the team back to glory.
Walker, who has been an integral part of City's success in recent years, has been struggling with form and fitness this season. Despite being just 34, the defender's pace and energy have noticeably decreased, raising concerns over his ability to cope with the demands of the Premier League. McInerney believes that City should have addressed the issue sooner, rather than waiting until Walker's decline became so apparent.
'In hindsight, perhaps City should have invested in a top-class right-back last summer,' McInerney said. 'Walker's decline has been a gradual process, but the team's reliance on him has masked the problems. However, with Guardiola's penchant for innovation and adaptation, it's surprising that he didn't recognize the need for change sooner.'
Walker's lack of pace and agility has been exposed in recent games, with opponents targeting the right flank as a weak point. City's rivals have taken note, and it's imperative that Guardiola addresses the issue quickly to prevent further exploitation. The City boss has a reputation for being ruthless when it comes to decision-making, but McInerney believes that he must be proactive in finding a suitable replacement for Walker.
'Guardiola needs to act fast to rectify the situation,' McInerney added. 'The team can't afford to wait any longer for Walker to regain his form. The transfer market is littered with talented right-backs, and City must invest in someone who can provide the necessary width and energy down the flank.'
With the January transfer window approaching, City will have the opportunity to bolster their squad and address the right-back problem. McInerney is adamant that Guardiola should seize the initiative and invest in a top-class right-back to ensure that City remain competitive in the title race.
'Walker may have been an excellent servant to the club, but his time is coming to an end,' McInerney concluded. 'It's time for Guardiola to look to the future and find a suitable replacement who can provide the necessary quality and depth to City's backline.'
