NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A couple of NFL defenders have some brutally honest advice for Will Levis if the Tennessee Titans quarterback is willing to listen. While Levis' fearlessness on the field has been a valuable asset to the Titans, some of his more seasoned opponents think it's high time he learned to balance that bravado with a dose of caution.
Specifically, the advice given to Levis is to take the sack rather than try to make a play that's just not there. Although Levis' impressive strength and elusiveness have allowed him to extend plays and even pick up first downs on occasion, it's undeniable that they've also led him to take some crushing hits that could've been avoided with a simple slide or a quicker decision to give up on the play.
Of course, there are some risks associated with taking the sack as well. For one thing, it can put your team in tough situations on second and third down, which can further compromise the Titans' offense. Furthermore, repeated sacks can lead to an increased loss of yards, ultimately hurting the team's overall chances of success.
Still, according to NFL defenders Mike Hughes and Shaquil Barrett, Levis should stick to taking the sack rather than risk exposing himself to punishing tackles from bigger and stronger men. Both Hughes and Barrett noted that if Levis doesn't change his style of play soon, he may find himself on the receiving end of even more pain, something no one wants to see happen to the promising QB.
Another issue is the mental effect of Levis' tendency to get hits repeatedly. As the NFL has become increasingly conscious about long-term player health and the effects of concussions, Levis' need to absorb physical punishment every time he drops back could raise legitimate worries about his future well-being.
Despite this, if you ask Levis, it seems unlikely he's going to change his approach anytime soon. For the most part, he remains confident in his ability to shake off hits and make plays in key situations, a critical component of the team's overall mentality. This is in line with his attitude to this point in his career – refusing to change his approach just because it may not be the most conventional.
So while some NFL defenders may urge Levis to think about taking the sack every now and then, the one person whose opinion ultimately matters most thinks the current approach is working. As Titans training camp progresses and a fresh season draws nearer, Titans fans will get their first glimpse of Levis in action and can then draw their own conclusions about whether the former second-rounder's unorthodox approach will pan out.
Still, one thing remains certain: All eyes will be on Levis and the Tennessee Titans as they search for an elusive playoff spot this season. Whether or not Levis is able to evolve while staying committed to what's made him a compelling NFL quarterback in the first place will be one of the bigger storylines of the year – not just for Tennessee and their fans but also for other playoff aspirants and enthusiasts around the league.
