The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi has breached the ‘severe plus’ category, sparking major concerns over the hazardous levels of air pollution in the capital city. As a result, the authorities have implemented tighter pollution control measures in an effort to mitigate the situation.
The dense toxic smog has caused visibility to drop sharply, reducing it to a mere 150 meters at Safdarjung airport. The poor air quality has severe implications for the health and well-being of Delhi’s residents, particularly those who suffer from respiratory issues. Prolonged exposure to such toxic air can exacerbate existing conditions like asthma and even lead to the development of new respiratory problems.
The AQI is calculated based on the levels of five major pollutants, namely particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and carbon monoxide (CO). The AQI is then categorized into six levels of health concern, ranging from ‘good’ to ‘severe plus.’ The ‘severe plus’ category, which Delhi has currently breached, indicates extremely hazardous air quality that poses a significant risk to public health.
In response to the worsening air quality, the authorities have introduced stricter pollution control measures. These include the closure of schools, a ban on construction activities, and a restriction on the entry of heavy vehicles into the city. Furthermore, the government has also announced plans to enhance public transportation and promote the use of cleaner fuels.
Residents of Delhi are advised to take necessary precautions to minimize their exposure to the toxic air. This includes wearing masks when outdoors, staying indoors during peak pollution hours, and avoiding strenuous activities. Additionally, residents can contribute to improving the air quality by adopting eco-friendly practices, such as using public transport, carpooling, or driving electric or hybrid vehicles.
The situation highlights the need for long-term solutions to address Delhi’s chronic air pollution problem. The government, in collaboration with private organizations and civil society, must work towards implementing sustainable measures to reduce pollution levels and ensure a healthier environment for the capital’s residents.
For now, Delhi residents can only hope that the situation improves soon, and the air quality returns to safer levels. Until then, they must remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the hazardous effects of the toxic smog.
