As the dust settles after the election, one thing is clear: the trans community has been dealt a devastating blow. The weaponization of trans people by Republicans has left many in the community feeling vulnerable, scared, and marginalized. But trans journalist Imara Jones is fighting back, and she’s not going down without a fight.
According to Jones, the Republican party’s decision to use trans people as a wedge issue was a deliberate attempt to whip up fear and hatred among the American public. By demonizing and dehumanizing trans people, they hoped to galvanize their base and propel Donald Trump to victory. And it seems to have worked. But Jones is not willing to let them get away with it.
“There’s something wrong with the character of this country,” Jones insists. “When we allow politicians to use marginalized groups as a way to get ahead, it says something about our values and our priorities.” Jones believes that the Republican party’s tactics were a form of “dritical transphobia,” designed to undermine the trans community’s hard-won gains and set back the struggle for equality and justice.
But Jones is not just pointing fingers; she’s also calling for action. “We need to organize,” she says. “We need to mobilize our communities, our allies, and our supporters to fight back against this kind of hate and intolerance.” Jones argues that the trans community has been too quiet for too long, and that it’s time to speak out and demand respect and recognition.
One way to do this, Jones suggests, is to support trans-led organizations and initiatives that are working to promote trans rights and visibility. This can include donating money, volunteering time, and amplifying trans voices on social media. By doing so, we can help to build a more just and inclusive society, where trans people are valued and respected.
Another way to fight back is to challenge the Republican party’s transphobic rhetoric and policies head-on. This can mean calling out politicians who use hate speech and discriminatory language, boycotting businesses that support anti-trans policies, and advocating for laws and policies that promote trans equality.
Finally, Jones emphasizes the importance of building alliances and coalitions with other marginalized groups. “We can’t do this alone,” she says. “We need to work with other communities who have been targeted and marginalized by the Trump administration, and build a movement that is inclusive, intersectional, and powerful.” By working together, Jones believes that we can create a society that is more just, equitable, and just for all.
