Tyson Barrie, a defenseman and one-time points leader for the Colorado Avalanche, has had an unconventional journey to saving his National Hockey League career this season. Barrie experienced uncertainty throughout the summer as he went unsigned, waiting anxiously for the opportunity that would eventually guarantee a continued NHL career.
This development left many within the hockey circle puzzled as fans have not seen Barrie going unsigned before. So what changed? NHL teams do shift their priorities season by season, according to new objectives, team changes, and goal set even before the last year started; this could have pushed Barrie down their priority list of choices.
But did that truly represent the fate awaiting him? The answer to the question seems quite the contrary. Given Barrie's reputation as an established and sought-after NHL defenseman who achieved NHL playoff success playing both regular seasons for the Avalanche for two different stints and being successful in making playoff games.
When contract renewal didn't happen, there emerged a different chance. It was officially announced by the general Manager of Calgary Flames that Barrie will have a professional tryout with the Flames, which offered a glimmer of hope for a return to the promising NHL career many experts thought had disappeared a season prior. Upon being declared available for tryout, NHL fans, specifically Calgary Flames' fans were well informed of Barrie becoming another member on the list for Flame's prospect.
A week prior to open camps, Calgary Flames' prospects joined team activities at training camps to gauge chemistry and other important metrics. Barrie proved to be among the promising signees this season. While the move for a tryout might have been a call to something different, the key objective was to determine opportunities - something one shouldn't have ruled out solely if the conventional path made an NHL return seem farfetched.
Contract offers signify one last reality: All is right in Barrie's camp with this renewed NHL life, even in the face of many team rejection letters over the prior months; several signs during the trial show NHL team officials showing approval over moves made by Tyson Barrie.
During its release, NHL team sources gave signs openly declaring the Barrie has sealed the fate he decided and envisioned for himself following the close of his prior contract in an unknown NHL off-season future.
