HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) No. 2 UConn sent a clear message to its rivals in a thoroughly dominant display on Thursday as the team cruised to a commanding 86-32 win over Boston University in the season opener. With two of its freshman stars taking center stage, the Huskies hardly broke a sweat as they romped to a decisive victory, leaving little doubt that they are a team to be reckoned with this season.
Jana El Alfy, one of UConn's prized recruits, stole the show with a phenomenal performance that will undoubtedly send shockwaves throughout the nation. With an impressive stat line of 17 points and 11 rebounds, the talented freshman demonstrated that she is more than capable of filling the void left by last year's departing stars. But El Alfy was not the only one to make a lasting impression as her teammate Sarah Strong shone brightly with 17 points and six steals, showcasing her incredible defensive prowess.
Strong's impressive defensive display has to be a welcome sight for UConn fans, who are still basking in the glory of their team's rich history of producing some of the most gifted defenders to ever take the court. As the freshman continued to wreak havoc on the Boston University offense, it became increasingly clear that she is someone to watch out for in the future. And as the game wore on, UConn's dominant performance was simply too much for the Boston University defense to handle.
With their convincing victory, the Huskies made an ominous statement that will likely send a chill down the spines of their opponents this season. And it wasn't just the scoreline that will have tongues wagging - the manner in which they ran out comfortable winners, showcasing their explosive offense and shutdown defense, will undoubtedly make them favorites to pick up some hardware at the end of the season.
Boston University, on the other hand, were offered a rude awakening to life in the fast lane as they struggled to cope with the relentless onslaught that UConn unleashed upon them. Despite their best efforts, they found themselves powerless to prevent the Huskies' juggernaut from running them over, eventually succumbing to a lopsided defeat that will leave them counting the cost.
While UConn will undoubtedly take great heart from their thumping win, Boston University will have to regroup and lick their wounds in preparation for the grueling challenges that lie ahead. And for UConn's freshman sensations, the game was all about making a statement of intent - a vibrant declaration that they are ready to take on the world and make this season their own.
