Luton Town captain Sonny Bradley has come out in praise of his teammate Elijah Adebayo after the forward was subjected to vile racist abuse during their match against Coventry. Despite the disgusting actions of some individuals, Adebayo showed immense character and resilience as he found the net for the Hatters.
Bradley said that he was proud of the way Adebayo handled the situation, and that his actions on the pitch sent out a strong message to those who sought to bring him down. 'Elijah is a top player and an even better person. To see him go through that and still have the mental toughness to perform on the pitch is a testament to his character.'
The incident occurred during the match against Coventry, as Adebayo was targeted by a section of the crowd. Despite the abuse, Adebayo kept his cool and continued to play, eventually scoring a stunning goal that is set to be remembered for a long time.
Bradley went on to say that the actions of the abusers were 'unacceptable' and that they had no place in the game. He praised the club and the authorities for taking swift action against those responsible and for doing everything they could to support Adebayo.
'We stand by Elijah and we stand by each other. We are a team and we will not let the actions of a few bring us down. We will continue to fight for what is right and we will never let hate win.'
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with many calling for greater action to be taken to tackle racism in football. It has also highlighted the need for greater support and protection for players who are subjected to this kind of abuse.
