Chandra Shekhar Azad Park, formerly known as Alfred Park, is a historical site of immense significance located in the heart of Prayagraj. The park was initially established in 1870 by the British colonial rulers and was named after Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh. However, the park gained its current name in honor of the heroic freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad, who sacrificed his life on the very grounds of the park.

He was a key member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, a revolutionary group that sought to end British rule in India through armed struggle. The fateful day of February 27, 1931, marked a turning point in the history of the park. It was on this day that Chandra Shekhar Azad engaged in a fierce shootout with the British police. The freedom fighter had visited the park to meet with a fellow revolutionary, but he was unaware that the British authorities had been tipped off about the meeting. As the police closed in on him, Azad realized that he was surrounded and that there was no way to escape.

With his trademark courage and defiance, Azad decided to go down fighting rather than surrender to the British. He engaged the police in a fierce gun battle, but he was vastly outnumbered and outgunned. Despite being wounded, Azad continued to fight, inspiring his comrades and striking fear into the hearts of his enemies.
