KEN Mode founding members Jesse and Shane Matthewson didn’t know as kids that they’d grow up to become lifelong purveyors of dissonant, thrashing and brooding noise rock, but in retrospect, it seems like an inevitable path for the Canadian duo.
With a career spanning over two decades, KEN Mode has built a reputation for their intense, unapologetic and abrasive sound, which has garnered them a dedicated following across the globe.
But KEN Mode’s success isn’t just about the music; it’s about the journey that Jesse and Shane have taken to reach this point. From their early days as teenagers playing in local bands to their current status as noise rock icons, the Matthewson brothers have always been driven by a fierce passion and determination.
Growing up in the Canadian prairies, Jesse and Shane were exposed to a diverse range of music, from punk to metal to indie rock. But it was the raw energy and rebelliousness of noise rock that truly resonated with them. They began playing music together as kids, eventually forming KEN Mode in the late 1990s.
Throughout the years, KEN Mode has undergone numerous lineup changes, but the core creative partnership between Jesse and Shane has remained constant. Their bond as brothers has been the driving force behind the band, allowing them to push through the ups and downs of the music industry.
Their early days were marked by DIY ethics, with the band self-releasing their music and touring extensively across North America. It was a grueling but rewarding experience that taught them the importance of perseverance and hard work.
As KEN Mode’s reputation grew, so did their sound. They began to experiment with new textures and dynamics, incorporating elements of post-rock, electronic music and even industrial noise. This willingness to evolve and take risks has been key to their longevity.
But amidst all the changes, one thing has remained constant: KEN Mode’s commitment to creating music that is raw, honest and uncompromising. They have always refused to conform to industry expectations or compromise their artistic vision, a stance that has earned them the respect of fans and peers alike.
Today, KEN Mode continues to tour and release new music, their sound as potent and relevant as ever. Jesse and Shane may not have known as kids that they’d become noise rock legends, but one thing is certain: they are still making noise, and it’s louder than ever.
