UPSET ALERT: No. 21 Oregon CRUSHED by Unranked Team in Thrilling Hawaii Matchup!

November 27, 2024

LAIE, Hawaii (AP) — A shocking upset took place in the Hawaii North Shore Showcase on Tuesday as No. 21 Oregon fell short against unranked South Dakota State, 75-70. The Ducks were handed their first loss of the season by a strong performance from South Dakota State's standout duo of Brooklyn Meyer and Paige Meyer.

Brooklyn Meyer led the charge with a remarkable 19 points and eight rebounds, dominating the boards and stifling Oregon's comeback attempts. Paige Meyer added 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists, showcasing a well-rounded game and exceptional court vision. The sisters' synergy on the court was on full display, and their combined effort ultimately sealed the victory for the Jackrabbits.

South Dakota State came out swinging in the first quarter, pushing the tempo and taking an early lead. As the game progressed, the Ducks struggled to gain traction and never managed to catch up, despite a late surge. Oregon's woes continued, with several key plays slipping through their fingers and momentum swings favoring the underdog team.

The Jackrabbits' impressive upset has shaken up the women's basketball landscape, dropping the Ducks from the ranks of the unbeaten. On the back of their victory, South Dakota State demonstrated resilience and skill that warrants recognition and potential ranking consideration in the near future.

Coach Aaron Johnston's side took advantage of Oregon's defensive vulnerabilities and maintained composure when it mattered most. 'It's huge for our team. We talked about believing and having confidence in ourselves,' Johnston said. 'We believe we can play with anybody in the country, and we have to carry this confidence the rest of the season.'

For Oregon, the defeat marked their first setback of the season and poses more questions than answers as the Ducks aim to regroup and rediscover their winning form. Their top-25 ranking will likely be up for discussion, with coach GRAZY ZAGUNis's performance under scrutiny heading into their next matchup.
