US Forgives Saudi Arabia for 9-11, But Families of the Victims Never Will

September 14, 2024

The US Is As Close As Ever To Saudi Arabia, 23 Years After 9-11. It has been 23 years since the devastating terrorist attack on US soil, which killed thousands of innocent people and changed the course of global politics forever. In the aftermath of the attack, the US government launched a global war on terror, invading Afghanistan and Iraq, and enacting stringent surveillance laws to prevent future attacks. However, despite the widespread outrage and condemnation of the attacks, the US government has maintained a close relationship with Saudi Arabia, the country from which the majority of the hijackers originated.

The relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia has been criticized by many, citing the Saudi government’s alleged ties to terrorist organizations and its dubious human rights record. The US government has been accused of downplaying these concerns and instead focusing on strengthening economic and strategic ties with Saudi Arabia. One of the main reasons for this is the significant oil reserves that Saudi Arabia possesses, which has led to the country becoming a crucial ally for the US in the region.

Despite the passage of time, the wounds of 9-11 still linger, and the families of the victims continue to seek justice and accountability for the Saudi government’s alleged role in the attacks. Many have criticized the US government for failing to thoroughly investigate the Saudi government’s involvement in the attacks and for not taking adequate action to hold those responsible accountable.

The legacy of 9-11 is full of misinformation and misguided policy initiatives. Rather than taking seriously the motives of the hijackers and their supporters, American politicians went headfirst into creating a massive surveillance state and growing the American presence overseas. What is worse is that not all of the masterminds are identified by Washington. While we know firmly that actors with connections to the Saudi General Intelligence Presidency (GIP) were at least aware of the incoming attacks on 9-11, politicians in Washington have rarely attempted to hold the Saudis responsible, and have been quick to strengthen ties between the Gulf monarchy and the United States.

The 9-11 attacks were not just random acts of terrorism; they were part of a broader campaign of violence and resistance against US foreign policy in the Middle East. Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the attacks, outlined the reasons behind the attacks in a letter to the American people. The letter revealed that the attacks were motivated by a deep-seated resentment towards US foreign policy in the region and the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia.

The War on Terror, launched by President George W. Bush in response to the 9-11 attacks, has been widely criticized for its failure to address the root causes of terrorism. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, the displacement of millions, and the destabilization of entire regions. The US government has been accused of perpetuating a cycle of violence and terrorism, with each new campaign creating new enemies and fueling further violence.

Despite the mounting evidence of Saudi Arabia’s ties to terrorist organizations, the US government has continued to strengthen its relationship with the country. In 2015, the Obama administration agreed to support Saudi Arabia’s military campaign against the Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen, which has resulted in widespread human rights abuses and the deaths of thousands of civilians. The Trump administration has also been accused of supporting Saudi Arabia’s brutal regime, including its human rights record and its role in the Yemen conflict.

Today, the US is closer than ever to Saudi Arabia, despite the growing concerns about the country’s human rights record and its ties to terrorism. The Biden administration has announced a $500 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia, which has been widely criticized by human rights groups. The sale has raised concerns about the potential for further human rights abuses and the perpetuation of violence in the region.

In conclusion, the US government’s continued support for Saudi Arabia, despite its dubious human rights record and ties to terrorism, is a betrayal of the families of the 9-11 victims. The legacy of 9-11 should be remembered for what it was – a deadly and avoidable reaction to US foreign policy. The US government must be held accountable for its actions and must take steps to address the root causes of terrorism, rather than perpetuating a cycle of violence and fear.
