An American university ice hockey team has issued an apology for guidance advising fans not to wear "green" or any clothing containing "Irish symbolism" while travelling around Belfast as it may be "deemed offensive".
The team, which has not been named, had given the advice to its supporters ahead of a match in the Northern Irish city, sparking widespread outrage and accusations of cultural insensitivity.
Fans took to social media to express their dismay and disappointment at the guidance, which they saw as an attempt to suppress Irish identity and culture.
"I was shocked and saddened to hear that our team had advised fans not to wear green or display Irish symbolism," said one supporter. "It's completely unacceptable and tone-deaf. We should be proud to show our Irish heritage, not hide it."
The apology, which was posted on the team's website, stated that the guidance had been given with the intention of keeping fans safe, but acknowledged that it had been "misguided" and "insensitive".
"We understand that our previous guidance may have caused offense and for that, we are truly sorry," the statement read. "We value and respect the cultural heritage of Belfast and its people, and we should not have suggested otherwise."
The team has promised to review its guidelines and ensure that they are more culturally sensitive in the future.
The incident has sparked a wider debate about cultural sensitivity and the need for teams and organizations to be more aware of the impact of their actions on local communities.
As one commentator noted, "This incident highlights the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity, particularly when travelling to different countries or cities. It's not enough to simply avoid giving offense; we should strive to be respectful and inclusive of local customs and cultures."
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Belfast City Council welcomed the team's apology and urged fans to continue to show their Irish pride.
"We are proud of our city's rich cultural heritage and we want visitors to feel welcome and included," the spokesperson said. "We encourage fans to wear their green jerseys and show their Irish spirit - after all, that's what makes Belfast such a great city."
