BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González, who the United States recognized as the winner of last year's presidential election, kicked off a tour of Latin America on Saturday, just days before President Nicolás Maduro is set to embark on a similar diplomatic mission.
González's tour, which will take him to Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and other countries in the region, is seen as an attempt to rally support from Latin American leaders for his claim to the Venezuelan presidency.
The Venezuelan opposition leader has been recognized by the United States and several other countries as the rightful winner of the presidential election, which was widely disputed due to allegations of fraud and irregularities.
Maduro, on the other hand, has maintained his grip on power in Venezuela, despite facing intense pressure from the international community to step down.
González's tour of Latin America is being closely watched by diplomats and analysts, who see it as a crucial test of his ability to build support among regional leaders for his claim to the presidency.
The opposition leader is expected to meet with several heads of state during his tour, including Argentine President Alberto Fernández and Chilean President Sebastian Piñera.
He will also attend a meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Colombia, where he is expected to press his case for recognition as the rightful leader of Venezuela.
The OAS has been a key player in the Venezuelan crisis, with several member states recognizing González as the winner of the presidential election.
Despite the challenges he faces, González remains optimistic about his chances of building support among Latin American leaders for his claim to the presidency.
'We are confident that the people of Latin America will see the truth and recognize me as the rightful leader of Venezuela,' he said in a statement prior to his departure for Argentina.
González's tour of Latin America comes at a critical time for Venezuela, which is facing a deepening economic crisis and a growing humanitarian emergency.
The country's economy has been in free fall for several years, with hyperinflation and shortages of food and medicine becoming increasingly common.
The humanitarian crisis has sparked a mass exodus of Venezuelans, with millions fleeing the country in search of better living conditions.
The international community has been criticized for its response to the crisis, with many arguing that more needs to be done to support the people of Venezuela.
González's tour of Latin America is seen as an attempt to put pressure on regional leaders to take a tougher stance against Maduro and to recognize him as the rightful leader of Venezuela.
It remains to be seen whether González will be successful in his mission, but one thing is clear: the fate of Venezuela hangs in the balance, and the next few weeks will be crucial in determining the country's future.
