There is little doubt that in the annals of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are often regarded as chokers due to their inability to secure their first-ever championship title despite consistently boasting massive talent in their squad. This perception seems likely to be challenged after the highly anticipated IPL 2025 Mega Auction, particularly with media speculations pointing towards one probable scenario in which Virat Kohli may return to his former position as RCB captain. If such an opportunity arises, then RCB must take it with both hands as such a decision promises potentially massive implications for the Bangalore-based franchise.
Virat Kohli was RCB skipper from 2013 to 2021 and although under his captaincy the team failed to win a single trophy, the batting dynamo managed to showcase his incredible ability to stand up for the big challenge, leading the side with utmost authority, and marshaling his resources as an inspirational leader and an exceptional strategist. Moreover, through that time, his stature as the greatest ever IPL run-getter and the only centurion skipper of RCB testifies to his immense batting prowess.
This raises a major question: Should Virat Kohli return as the RCB skipper after the IPL 2025 Mega Auction? Based on cricket pundit analysis and evidence from past RCB performances, this write-up presents three compelling reasons in favor of Kohli returning to his old role.
Reason #1: RCB's inability to capitalize on the assets under their previous leadership
Since Virat's resignation from captaincy in 2021, Faf du Plessis has taken charge of team RCB. Despite multiple efforts from the new leadership, RCB always finds a way to disappoint fans and underwhelm their expectations, finishing their last two campaigns at 3rd and 6th positions respectively. Simply put, the performance of RCB under the captaincy of Faf du Plessis is unpredictable, to say the least. For instance, despite witnessing an incredible maiden IPL century by emerging wicket-keeper batter, Anuj Rawat, Bangalore suffered a tragic loss to the Punjab Kings during the 2022 edition of the tournament. Virat Kohli's ability to assume pressure roles seamlessly will therefore provide much-needed steadiness for RCB's new setup post the 2025 IPL Mega Auction.
Reason #2: RCB may sign Virat Kohli at a significantly lower price than he would have otherwise been bought for at the Mega auction
There is a high probability that following the conclusion of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, multiple existing teams (with deep pockets), including the likes of Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, and the Chennai Super Kings might bid unthinkably crazy sums of money to scoop away one of the greatest finishers that the world has ever witnessed, for Virat's legendary brilliance will almost certainly attract a minimum price of 10 crores INR from aspiring bidders. But if as speculated, Kohli manages to return to RCB after being retained through 'The Right To Match' card during the auctions or purchased at his current retention price of 6 crores INR then RCB could save a great amount of money in doing so that could instead be better applied to some of their crucial recruitment requirements, namely acquiring express all-rounders, reliable power-hitters, fast-bowlers, top-order batting talents with long-term potential etc.
Reason #3: The priceless personal touch that comes along with naming Virat Kohli as captain of RCB - he's a former integral element of this team's legacy and has deep roots
This critical aspect may be the reason that explains why the odds for Kohli to regain the crown look promising in favor of the move. For Virat Kohli has in the past devoted over 15 years of his life to RCB by representing it as both batsman and leader, his extremely special connection with Bangaloreans becoming all the stronger through all those magical knocks, inspiring hundreds & thousand & and more that leave a lasting memory of the team's near-sucidal failures eventually finishing as 'runners-up' thrice under the captaincy of Anil Kumble in 2009, and Virat Kohli on two separate events. He first led in the year 2016 - when they were pipped by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the tournament final - only to be beaten a second time in the IPL finals the following year this time it was against their arch-rivals and eventual winners Mumbai Indians in both cases where RCB finished as runners-up. The deep-rooted legacy of Virat Kohli would make his second stint as the captain all the more special, an aspect that could work greatly in RCB's favor in setting up a more long-term strategy for themselves ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction and beyond.
