Life has changed considerably since the 1980s, for better and for worse. With the rapid advancement in technology, things that were once considered essential are now nothing more than distant memories, relics of a bygone era that may seem peculiar to younger generations.
In the 1980s, the world was at the crossroads of a technological revolution. Home computing had just begun to take roots, while cable television was slowly spreading across the globe. In this fascinating period of time, many household items and consumer trends rose to fame but began to decline soon after. Here are 14 things that were ubiquitous in Sheffield during this time period.
1. Dial-Up Internet and Landlines: These relics were a commonality in the homes of 80s Sheffield residents. Children were accustomed to the distinct sound of the dial-up tone as it connected to the 'information superhighway' while parents relied on their landline phones for communication.
2. Mixtapes and Cassette Tapes: Before the streaming era took over, cassette tapes were the platform for people to enjoy music. It required diligence, care, and time to select one's favorite tracks and compile them into these little playlists.
3. Walkmans: Hailed as one of the pioneering innovations in the portable music industry, Walkmans allowed Sheffield residents to take their tunes with them on-the-go.
4. Payphones: During a time before widespread use of personal cellphones, Sheffield residents found public phone booths convenient places to communicate while on-the-go.
5. Aerobics Instructors: It was not uncommon for any 80s child to wish to emulate their favorite aerobics instructor with spandex leotards and sweatbands being the embodiment of their athletic aspirations.
6. Bubble Gum: As one wandered the city streets of Sheffield, blowing pink bubbles was an essential rite of passage. As if it were practically expected of kids to indulge in a seemingly timeless bubble of tasty delight.
7. Overalls and Jihnsas: The outfits made of tough and long-lasting material became a staple for 80s fashionistas - ideal for the era's youth, who could endure a bit of tough wear and tear.
8. Shellsuits: Representing iconic athletic fashion from this bygone era, it embodied bold ideas of the outfits, a trend it inherited from 70s fashion scene.
9. Smashing Pumpkins VHS collections: Home computers aside, owners eagerly sought other diverse recording and playing tools - amongst which those big and colorful cassettes really looked very noticeable for recorded and broadcastable visual media through gadgets like cassette decks and recorders.
10. Brick Cellphones: When eventually able to fit phone components in handsets small enough to be defined 'mobile', an architectural bulk characterized the initial phones.
11. Tamagotchis, those little monitor displays inside a small space was like something you pulled out to play using few tools at hand and also a quick digital friend every-time.
12. Bicycles with cassette playing attachments known as the 'boom box' became portable musical wonders with a customized mount called the boom box bike being assembled as two-in-one design feature set - one for carrying your gear at hand and having it synchronized as one gadget with bicycle stability while riding without hassle.
13. Toys that required one to assemble them from over 200 pieces didn't make their assembling annoyingly bad enough - one fad in particular during the eighties the toy known for selling very well really meant to say challenging was actually learning how these toys helped form our love.
14. The A-Team, 80's hit TV series - they made TV great with what looks as an action movie playing every eps.
