Wild Finish in Kansas as Johnson's Last-Minute Heroics Deny Colorado a Major Upset

October 13, 2024

Avery Johnson rebounded from throwing a costly interception by finding Jayce Brown for a 50-yard touchdown with 2:14 remaining as No. 18 Kansas State beat Colorado 31-28. The dual-threat quarterback for the Wildcats finished with a rushing score and two passing touchdowns, completing 23 of 35 passes for 292 yards.

Johnson's recovery from his late-game mistake showcased his ability to take charge and rescue his team from what seemed like a looming disaster. His heroic performance demonstrated a defining quality of top-tier quarterbacks – the ability to lead his team under intense pressure.

About six minutes into the game, Colorado jumped into the lead 0-7 as their debut quarterback took charge with a five-play 71-yard drive to start the game. The rest of the first quarter was relatively uneventful but saw an early threat as Kansas State lost the ball. An attempt from 40 yards on the following drive ended disappointingly as the field goal attempt resulted in an unsuccessful shot.

Colorado would double their score to 0-14 in a nine-play 77-yard drive. On third down and six yards from the goal line, a forced pass was nearly deflected off the defender but fortunately reached the open receiver.

Despite trailing 0-14 in the second quarter, No. 18 Kansas State regained footing in their home stadium with a rushing touchdown. A few yards short of a rushing first down with a minute left in the second, Johnson rushed to a crucial second down conversion to continue their approach to the goal. From first and goal, Johnson made sure his consecutive drive counted after consecutive losses as he claimed a one-yard touchdown in a crucial rush.

The unrelenting team spirit of the Kansas State players is what paved the way to success for No. 18 Kansas State. Every move the players made was well-coordinated, thanks to a team effort. In their next league match of the season, the Kansas State Wildcats are set to face off in their home stadium against another formidable opponent, setting the ground for a thrilling end-to-end clash.

Getting their heads back into the competitive fray, the Colorado team will be hoping for more thrilling comebacks in future. Colorado seemed the sure underdog heading into this contest and had to overcome bigger losses even to keep up with No. 18 Kansas State.

For Kansas State to be able to fend off fierce Colorado should come as a welcome relief to the head coaches after weeks building up to the event. While much work needs to be done, the sheer drive, passion, and tenacity displayed in this highly thrilling clash will stand Kansas State in good stead as the team forges ahead.
