Terence Winter is no stranger to creating hit television shows, with a portfolio that boasts the likes of The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. However, his most recent venture, Tulsa King, marks a significant departure from his earlier work. For the first time, Winter found himself collaborating with screen legend Sylvester Stallone, who also stars in the show as Dwight Manfredi, a New York mobster navigating unfamiliar territory in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Winter sat down for an exclusive interview to discuss the making of Tulsa King and, more importantly, what viewers can expect from the highly anticipated Season 2. Given the show's premise, one would be forgiven for assuming that Tulsa King is yet another dark, brooding crime drama. On the contrary, it has been hailed as the funniest Taylor Sheridan show to date, and Winter reveled in blending the typical Sheridan template with humor.
"From the moment the script landed on my desk, I knew it had the potential to be something truly special," Winter explained. "Taylor has always been known for pushing boundaries and challenging his characters in unique and innovative ways. But this time around, I think we might have created something truly remarkable – a show that effortlessly balances action, suspense, and heart, all while never taking itself too seriously."
When asked about working alongside Stallone, Winter could barely contain his excitement. "Sly is an absolute force of nature," he gushed. "Not only is he a talented actor, but he's also one of the most generous and affable co-stars anyone could ask for. To watch him bring Dwight Manfredi to life has been an honor, and I genuinely believe he's giving one of the performances of his career."
As for Season 2, Winter remained tight-lipped on the specifics but promised viewers that the show would take some bold and unexpected turns. "We're still hard at work on the writing, but let's just say we've been given carte blanche to push the boundaries even further," he hinted. "The relationships between the characters will deepen, Dwight's world will be turned upside down once again, and our new storylines will keep viewers guessing from start to finish. We've got our work cut out for us, but I couldn't be more thrilled with the direction Tulsa King is headed."
With its winning blend of action, humor, and grittiness, Tulsa King has emerged as one of the standout hits of the year. Add in Stallone's unforgettable performance, and Season 2 is shaping up to be a very exciting prospect indeed. While an exact release date has yet to be confirmed, one thing's for certain – Tulsa King is on the verge of cementing its status as one of the most compelling and unpredictable shows currently on the air.
