Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Drops 39 Points as Thunder Oust Mavericks in Quarterfinal Thriller!

December 11, 2024

In a highly-anticipated showdown between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Dallas Mavericks, it was the former who emerged victorious, taking home a 118-104 win in their NBA Cup quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday night.

The Thunder’s star point guard, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, stole the spotlight, pouring in an impressive 39 points to propel his team to a commanding victory.

The contest got underway with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. The Mavericks looked sluggish out of the gate, committing several unforced turnovers that the Thunder capitalized on to build an early lead.

However, the Mavericks quickly found their footing, and the two teams battled back and forth throughout the opening frame. The Thunder ultimately took a slim 29-26 lead into the second quarter.

The second stanza saw the Thunder push their advantage, outscoring the Mavericks 31-24 to take a 60-50 lead into the halftime break. Gilgeous-Alexander was instrumental in the Thunder’s success, tallying 19 points in the first half.

As the teams returned to the court for the second half, it became clear that the third quarter would be pivotal in determining the outcome. The Mavericks, desperate to trim the deficit, came out with renewed energy, but the Thunder’s stout defense stifled their efforts.

With their lead firmly intact, the Thunder focused on maintaining their momentum, orchestrating a series of clinical possessions that kept the Mavericks at bay. Gilgeous-Alexander continued to shine, knocking down several clutch shots to seal the Thunder’s fate as quarterfinal winners.

The Mavericks, despite their valiant efforts, were unable to close the gap, ultimately falling to the superior Thunder outfit. As the final buzzer sounded, the Thunder’s bench emptied, and the team’s jubilant players rushed the court to celebrate their hard-fought victory.

The win propels the Thunder into the next round of the NBA Cup, where they will face a stiffer challenge in the form of the tournament’s higher-seeded teams.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s dominating performance has undoubtedly placed the Thunder in a strong position to contend for the NBA Cup title, and fans can’t help but salivate at the prospect of witnessing more thrilling displays from the talented young point guard.
