Days before the highly anticipated T20I cricket match between India and Bangladesh in Gwalior, authorities have taken a drastic measure to ensure the event passes off without any untoward incidents. The district magistrate has clamped prohibitory orders, effective immediately, to maintain peace and prevent any potential flare-ups during the match.
The orders, which will remain in force till October 7, specifically ban protests and the circulation of inflammatory material on social media. This decision comes on the heels of a 'Gwalior bandh' call given by the Hindu Mahasabha on the match day, October 6. Other organisations have also announced plans to stage protests, prompting the authorities to take pre-emptive measures.
The Hindu Mahasabha, a right-wing outfit, has been actively demanding the cancellation of the Sunday match, citing atrocities committed on Hindus in Bangladesh. This development has triggered a chain reaction, with violent demonstrations, political upheaval, and even a change in government in August.
District magistrate and collector Ruchika Chauhan issued the prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), a rule that was brought into force in July, replacing the British-era Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). The decision to impose these orders came after a recommendation from the Superintendent of Police.
The urgency to maintain peace and order is palpable, as the match is expected to draw large crowds. The authorities are keen to avoid any incidents that may jeopardize the success of the event. By putting these prohibitory orders in place, they hope to pre-empt any potential discord and ensure that the fans can enjoy the match without worrying about their safety.
It remains to be seen how the situation unfolds, but one thing is certain: the eyes of the cricketing world will be on Gwalior on October 6. Will the authorities be able to maintain peace and order, or will the match be marred by controversy? Only time will tell.
