Drones Run Amok: Shocking Statistics Reveal Over 100 Flights Disrupted in Just 4 Years

September 21, 2024

A total of 122 flights have been disrupted due to illegal drone activities over the past four years, data showed Thursday, prompting calls for stricter measures and penalties.

From September 2020 to August 2024, a total of 506 cases of unauthorized drones operating near airports were reported, resulting in a significant number of flight disruptions.

The increase in drone-related incidents has raised concerns about aviation safety and the need for stricter regulations. Authorities have been working to detect and prevent such incidents, but the numbers remain alarming.

Experts attribute the rise in drone-related disruptions to the growing availability and affordability of drones, as well as the lack of awareness among drone operators about aviation laws and regulations.

"The numbers are disturbing, and it is clear that we need to do more to prevent such incidents," said an aviation safety expert. "Stricter penalties and education are key to addressing this issue."

Lawmakers are considering imposing stiffer penalties for those who engage in illegal drone activities. Currently, the maximum penalty for operating a drone without permission is a fine and imprisonment, but authorities believe more needs to be done to deter such behavior.

Airlines and airports have also been working together to develop measures to prevent drone-related disruptions. Some airports have implemented drone-detection systems, which use radar and other technologies to detect and track drones operating in the vicinity of airports.

Meanwhile, aviation authorities have launched public awareness campaigns to educate the public about the risks and consequences of operating drones near airports.

As the number of drone-related incidents continues to rise, it is clear that more needs to be done to address this issue. With the holiday season approaching and air travel expected to increase, authorities are urging drone operators to exercise caution and follow the law.
