Refereeing chief Dino Tommasi has reignited the fire surrounding the recent Atalanta-Milan match by reiterating that Milan coach Paulo Fonseca was wrong to protest so angrily over a contentious goal.
The match, which saw Atalanta emerge victorious, was marred by controversy when a goal was awarded to the home team despite what appeared to be a clear foul in the buildup.
Fonseca was incensed by the decision, and his subsequent outburst earned him a warning from the referee. However, the Milan coach has since refused to back down, claiming that the goal should have been disallowed and that the referee's decision was 'clearly incorrect'.
Tommasi, however, disagrees with Fonseca's assessment. In an interview with a local media outlet, the refereeing chief stated that the referee's decision was the correct one and that Fonseca's reaction was unwarranted.
'The referee made the right call,' Tommasi said. 'He followed the rules and applied them correctly. Fonseca's reaction was unfortunate, but we understand that emotions can run high in the heat of the moment.'
Tommasi's comments are likely to add fuel to the fire, with Fonseca and the Milan faithful already fuming at what they perceive to be an injustice.
The debate is likely to continue, with many pundits weighing in on the issue. However, one thing is certain: the controversy surrounding the Atalanta-Milan match is far from over.
For his part, Fonseca remains adamant that the goal should have been disallowed. Speaking ahead of Milan's next match, the coach reiterated his claim that the referee 'made a mistake' and that the goal was 'not legitimate'.
'We'll learn from this and move on,' Fonseca said. 'But it doesn't change the fact that the referee made an incorrect decision. We'll file our complaint with the relevant authorities and hope that justice is served.'
The Italian Football Federation has yet to comment on the matter, but it's likely that an investigation will be launched to determine whether the referee's decision was indeed correct.
As for Fonseca, he'll need to be careful not to let his emotions get the better of him. Another outburst could result in further disciplinary action, which could ultimately hurt his team's chances of success on the pitch.
