PARIS: Lille warmed up for next week´s trip to Liverpool in the Champions League with a confident 2-0 win over Nice to move into third place in the Ligue 1 standings.
The victory, achieved through goals from Canadian striker Jonathan David and midfielder Benjamin Andre, will boost the morale of the Lille players ahead of the tough clash against the Reds at Anfield, a venue notorious for its intimidating atmosphere.
Lille´s win pushed them two points above fourth-placed Monaco, who surprisingly lost to Brest, thus tightening their grip on a Champions League spot as they head into the business end of the season.
The defeat for Monaco marked a setback in their pursuit of Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain, who have a commanding lead at the top, with Monaco now 10 points adrift in second place.
Lille will look to carry the momentum from this win into their crunch match against Liverpool, a side known for their tenacity and incredible European record under the stewardship of Jurgen Klopp.
The French side will need to draw upon all their reserves of strength and tactical acumen if they are to emerge with a positive result against the Merseyside giants and keep their own Champions League aspirations on track.
Coach Paulo Fonseca will be pleased with the application and discipline shown by his players against Nice, particularly in the second half when they dominated proceedings and limited their opponents to only a handful of scoring opportunities.
Jonathan David, the highly rated Canadian forward, once again demonstrated his clinical finishing with a well-taken goal that showcased his impressive movement and technique in the penalty area.
His strike partner, Timothy Weah, also posed problems for the Nice defense with his pace and agility, and will be looking to make a similar impact against Liverpool´s rearguard next week.
Lille´s midfield duo of Andre and youssoufa had a significant influence on the outcome of the match, controlling the tempo and dictating the flow of the game with their astute passing and vision.
Their understanding and interplay will be crucial in nullifying the influence of Liverpool´s creative forces, such as Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, who have a proven track record of causing chaos and destruction in opposition defenses.
As the French side prepare for their daunting task at Anfield, they can take heart from the fact that Liverpool have not been entirely convincing in recent weeks and may be vulnerable to a well-organized and spirited display from Lille.
Nevertheless, the Reds remain a formidable force on their home turf and will be expected to provide a stern test of Lille´s credentials as a top-class European outfit.
