FREDERICTON — A mass of cold air that meandered south from the Arctic has sent temperatures plunging with wind chills making it feel like -40 Celsius or colder from New Brunswick to eastern Alberta.
This extreme cold snap has brought daily life to a standstill in many parts of Canada, with authorities urging residents to stay indoors and avoid any non-essential travel.
The cold air, which originated from the Arctic, has been moving southwards over the past few days, bringing with it extremely low temperatures and harsh winds.
As a result, many schools and businesses have been forced to close, and several major highways have been shut down due to the hazardous driving conditions.
The government has also issued warnings about the risks of frostbite and hypothermia, especially for vulnerable members of the population such as the elderly and young children.
In response to the crisis, emergency services have been put on high alert, with crews working around the clock to clear roads and restore power to affected areas.
Meanwhile, residents are being advised to take precautions to stay safe and warm, including stocking up on food and water, and checking in on neighbors who may be in need of assistance.
The extreme cold is expected to continue for the next few days, with temperatures forecast to remain well below freezing.
As Canadians brave the cold, they are also being reminded of the importance of community and looking out for one another during times of crisis.
