Alex de Minaur's ATP Finals debut appears to have come to a brutal end with a match still to play after being blown off court by a rejuvenated Daniil Medvedev. The Russian, who said he was looking forward to the season being over after succumbing to a tantrum during his opening round defeat to Taylor Fritz, brushed aside the Australian No.1 6-2 6-4 in 78 minutes of high-octane tennis on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old Medvedev, who has been experiencing a mediocre season by his high standards, seemed to find his footing on the courts of Turin, Italy, leaving many wondering what had changed his fortunes. The answer, it seems, lies in his attitude. Gone was the sullen and frustrated player who had stormed off the court just days earlier, replaced by a focused and determined athlete, hell-bent on turning his season around.
The effects of Medvedev's newfound resolve were all too apparent on the Australian No.1, Alex de Minaur, who seemed powerless to stop the Russian's onslaught. De Minaur, who was making his debut at the ATP Finals, had been expected to put up a strong showing, but ultimately found himself on the receiving end of a tennis masterclass.
The match itself was a reasonably short affair, lasting just 78 minutes, but the consequences for De Minaur could be far-reaching. With just one match left to play, the Australian's chances of advancing to the next round appear slim to none, and he will now have to rely on other results to stay afloat. This must come as a bitter disappointment to De Minaur, who had been expecting a lot more from his first outing at the ATP Finals.
For Medvedev, on the other hand, the victory brings a welcome respite from a difficult season. He had been struggling to find his form, and his on-court behavior had become increasingly erratic as a result. However, on Tuesday, he seemed like a different player, focused and determined to succeed. The question on everyone's lips now is: can he keep this up for the rest of the tournament?
