Pornography has been a topic of discussion and debate for many years, with some arguing it has a place in a healthy and open-minded society, while others claim it can have serious negative consequences for individuals and communities. However, one thing that is often overlooked in the conversation surrounding pornography is just how much of it people are watching – and where they are watching it.
A recent surge in mobile internet access and affordable data plans has made it easier than ever for people to watch porn on the go, and as a result, pornography consumption has skyrocketed.
While this might not come as a surprise to many, what is perhaps more shocking is where people are choosing to watch porn. Gone are the days of furtively watching explicit content behind closed doors; an increasing number of people are now watching porn in public places – including on buses, in libraries, in classrooms, and even in offices.
This shift towards increased public consumption of pornography raises a host of questions about societal values and norms, and whether we need to rethink what is considered acceptable in our public spaces. After all, it is one thing to watch porn in private, but it is quite another to do so in places where others may be subjected to it against their will.
Of course, part of the issue here is a lack of awareness about what is considered acceptable behavior in public. Many people do not seem to realize that watching porn in public is not only likely to make others uncomfortable, but it may also be against the law in some jurisdictions.
Perhaps more concerning, however, is the implication this has for the objectification and exploitation of certain groups. By consuming porn in public, we send a tacit message that the objectification and exploitation of certain individuals is condoned – or at the very least, is not something to be taken seriously.
That being said, this is a complex issue with no easy solutions. Rather than simply trying to police the consumption of pornography in public, we need to start a larger discussion about the societal values and norms that underlie our attitudes to sex and relationships.
One potential starting point here is education. In order to change societal attitudes towards porn consumption, we need to provide people with a more nuanced understanding of the industry and its impact on individuals and communities. This means not only teaching children about healthy relationships, but also providing them with a critical understanding of the power dynamics at play in the adult entertainment industry.
Furthermore, it is also up to us as a society to challenge the status quo and question why it is that we tolerate – or even encourage – the objectification and exploitation of certain groups. Only by doing so can we begin to address the root causes of the issues surrounding public consumption of pornography, and start to build a more just and equitable society.
