This Program Has Helped Oregonians with Disabilities Save $100 MILLION - Here's How!

December 16, 2024

A decade ago, Oregon ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) was introduced, providing a pathway to financial independence for thousands of Oregonians experiencing disabilities. Since its inception, the program has undergone numerous transformations, enabling participants to save a staggering $100 million.

The ABLE program is designed to help individuals with disabilities save for future expenses, such as education, employment, and healthcare, without jeopardizing government benefits like Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). ABLE accounts operate much like 529 college savings plans, offering tax-free growth and withdrawals for qualified disability expenses.

Recognizing the significance of financial security for people with disabilities, Oregon ABLE has continued to expand its services, providing more flexibility and accessibility for its users. Participants can engage with the program through an online platform, accessing essential tools and resources that aid in their financial journey.

The $100 million milestone is a testament to the program's effectiveness in empowering individuals with disabilities to achieve a better quality of life. ABLE accounts have allowed individuals to pursue education, employment opportunities, and enjoy experiences that may have seemed unattainable before, further solidifying their independence.

Moreover, the Oregon ABLE program emphasizes family involvement, enabling family members and friends to make contributions to the account. Contributions to an ABLE account are subject to the annual gift tax exclusion and may also qualify for a state tax deduction. The ability to receive and manage gifts, in addition to direct contributions, expands the individual's capacity to reach their long-term goals.

In recognition of this remarkable achievement, state and local officials have expressed their admiration for the program's perseverance and the impact it has on its participants' lives. 'We are incredibly proud of the progress made by Oregon ABLE and the meaningful difference it's made for countless individuals and families,' said a representative of the state.

Policies governing ABLE accounts continue to evolve, which may lead to future enhancements of the program. With persistent innovation and a passion for fostering independence, Oregon ABLE aims to continue uplifting the lives of thousands of Oregonians affected by disabilities.
