Wild Bastards, the sci-fi roguelike shooter, is an unexpectedly deceptive game. On the surface, it appears to follow the traditional roguelike and shooter formulas, with players experiencing a sense of repetition in their short-term goals. However, as you progress and encounter the wide variety of loot and each character's special set of abilities, this game manages to warm its way into your heart.
Initially, the gameplay might prove quite simplistic, shooting multiple rounds of the same type of enemies, not really knowing what is happening. At least that’s how it made this reviewer feel. One encounters a range of hostile individuals scattered across an alien landscape and begins to clear through it, room by room. Their existence on the other side can be very scary, as they have a more varied arsenal of powerful guns.
However, every subsequent run provides access to a set of new abilities for players, including allies who provide increased aggression to an incoming battle. These unlockable abilities, be it through purchased loot, choosing certain upgrades or special events, can eventually unlock newer types of player access. One example of this, in Wild Bastard, is having a massive, high-powered laser appear above your player.
What serves as the ultimate game-changer in each roguelike title is the unlocking of various pathways or characters for a player in one run. Unlocking every additional option creates diversity in a given game run, so it doesn't take long before things become absolutely complicated.
There is no doubt Wild Bastards has adopted that core component into their design, allowing access to special forms or additional characters with each successful level. Combining this variety and creativity gives Wild Bastard increased diversity for their given gameplay. Not so often will enemies appear and overwhelm the players, which adds enough chance to the overall playthrough, ultimately yielding better satisfaction.
The second big advantage about Wild Bastard is its rogue-lilies nature. Providing players tools that allow all types combinations unlocks all forms of free play inside the massive variety structure in bastards space-based rogue-like system, making easy room to play in space and enjoying to unlock. With an option to upgrade characters, and unlock levels and making own unique sets.
Whether by accident, choice or game design, Wild Bastards is a deliciously destructive toy box filled with the raw materials and creative ideas to produce a run as long as desired, using any play method we see necessary. Wild Bastard’s developers encourage open creation. Combining all play combinations possible through the use of special forms, upgrading an existing weapon to reach new levels that can serve your purposes, Wild Bastard fills a specific rog-linely niche for their consumers.
This is an honest look at Wild Bastards, the unique, sci-fi rogue like Wild Bastard which exists in this fast-paced ‘real-time’ world, but as things change. If you're looking for this type of unique entertainment Wild Bastard could be an endless snack shoot’em up that tests strategy strength through the choices and each level, creating and thriving game environment for those looking for an experience rich in depth beyond your average ordinary rogue-like experience.
