Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted his disappointment at leaving Manchester United despite his successful stint as interim coach, the Dutchman has revealed in an interview following his exit from the club. Despite the success that Van Nistelrooy enjoyed while taking temporary charge of Manchester United, the 47-year-old always knew his time as interim coach was limited. As the club’s search for a new manager drew to a close, the writing was on the wall for Van Nistelrooy, whose short-lived term in charge of Manchester United came to an end in dramatic fashion following the arrival of Ruben Amorim.

Former Sporting CP manager Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag at the helm of the club just last month and has wasted little time in overhauling his backroom team. Van Nistelrooy, who has been praised for his interim spell in charge of the team, was unsurprisingly disappointed to leave the club but said he understands why Amorim wanted to bring in his own assistants. “When you are a coach and you know the new person that’s coming in wants to bring in his own staff, that’s just how it is,” Van Nistelrooy said.

Regardless of his disappointment at his exit from Manchester United, Van Nistelrooy’s time as interim coach has had significant repercussions. Most notably, the Dutchman has now been appointed as manager of Leicester City. With a significant amount of experience in English football, Van Nistelrooy has all the ingredients required to be extremely successful at Leicester City in the role. Given Leicester City’s reputation for their ability to lure top players and Dutch connections in the past, Van Nistelrooy’s appointment could prove pivotal in the long-term vision of the club as they seek to propel themselves into European contention. Even with the doubts surrounding Van Nistelrooy’s longevity at Manchester United, his appointment has certainly added another level of intrigue to proceedings in the Premier League, particularly in the East Midlands.

Dutch legend Van Nistelrooy secured his first win as Leicester boss on his managerial debut as his side grabbed a thrilling comeback win over Cardiff City in a Carabao Cup match last month before following that win up with a narrow and hard-fought FA Cup draw with Torquay United. Van Nistelrooy remains calm and unflappable as you would expect from a dedicated Dutch manager well aware that there is still an imposing job to tackle ahead of him.

Given the managerial experience he amassed in short term at Manchester United, especially as it comes on the back of his coaching stints both at Utrecht U23 and PSV Eindhoven U19, Van Nistelrooy is undoubtedly on a unique upward trajectory for this early on in his managerial journey which has drawn attention from numerous clubs. No one can underestimate his success even though it is arguable whether he would have been interested in continuing until the conclusion of the season or otherwise.
