Exclusive: In an effort to create a more immersive experience for fans, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead senior narrative designer Luca Esposito opens up to SFX about the game's narrative and how it bridges the gap between Day One and the original movie.
For those unfamiliar with A Quiet Place and its subsequent films, the series is a tense horror drama that centres on the Abbott family's desperate attempt to survive a post-apocalyptic world overrun by monsters that use sound to hunt their prey.
The film's unique take on the horror genre, coupled with its tightly wound tension and effective use of silence as a horror element, made it an instant hit among fans and critics alike. However, beyond the original film and its sequel, little was known about the events that unfolded before and after the Abbott family's story.
That's where A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead comes in. As a recently released game set within the A Quiet Place universe, the game focuses on the early days following the apocalypse and the emergence of a new narrative thread that looks to connect the dots between the original film and its spin-off, Day One.
To get a deeper understanding of the game's narrative and how it interacts with the larger universe, SFX sat down with A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead senior narrative designer Luca Esposito.
'One thing we knew from the start was that our narrative had to take the form of a story that needed to span across several games,' Esposito says.
Given the ambitious nature of bridging two games and filling in gaps from the original movie, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead sets out to ensure that its narrative flows steadily from one point to the other. According to Esposito, the only way to do this effectively was to take a risk and shift away from the formula and present established by its predecessors.
'We didn't want to offer an answer for everything, but rather allow players the chance to experience it through gameplay,' Esposito adds.
Overall, through its blend of stealth-horror elements and ability to bridge story gaps between two vastly different games, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead successfully offers fans a new way to dive deeper into the world they've grown to love. It not only helps provide a new perspective on the narrative thread that initially introduced fans to the Abbott family's heart-stopping journey, but also furthers the reach of this new universe in ways the developers have, so far, explored only briefly.
