There should be little or no issue when a person is asked to take an oath, especially for public officers. After all, those who serve in government are expected to be honest and transparent, at the very least. Part of their job expectations is to be accountable to the people, according to the Constitution. And since accountability begins with transparency, a public officer ought to be an “open book" in all public hearings.
However, it has been observed that some politicians have shied away from taking oaths in recent times. They claim that taking oaths is unnecessary, or that it is a tactic used by their opponents to pin them down. But nothing could be further from the truth.
The oath is a promise that a public officer makes to his constituents, that he will serve them faithfully and honestly. It is a vow that transcends politics and gets to the heart of a public officer's character. When a politician refuses to take an oath, it speaks volumes about their integrity.
Accountability is key to democracy. Public officers are vested with the power to make decisions that affect the lives of millions of people. They are responsible for managing public resources, implementing policies, and making life and death decisions. But how can they be held accountable for their actions if they are not transparent in their dealings?
The American Constitution underscores the importance of accountability in public office. According to Article 2, Section 1, all elected officials must take an oath of office, where they swear to defend the Constitution. This oath is not a mere formality; it is a solemn promise that the officer will conduct themselves honestly and impartially in their dealings with the public.
But accountability begins with transparency. When politicians are transparent in their dealings, they show that they have nothing to hide. They show that they are willing to be held accountable for their actions. And they inspire trust and confidence in their constituents. On the other hand, when politicians hide behind legalese or claim executive privilege, they instill suspicion and distrust in the minds of the public.
Taking an oath is not a difficult thing to do. It is a simple act that shows a politician's willingness to be accountable. It shows that they understand that they are public servants and not overlords who can run roughshod over the people. But unfortunately, there are some politicians who would rather do whatever it takes to avoid taking an oath. They see it as a constraint, a means of limiting their freedom to operate with impunity.
At the end of the day, politicians who refuse to take an oath are exposing their own character. They are showing that they are driven by their own interests rather than the interests of the people. And they are betraying the trust that has been placed in them as public officers.
