US Army on Brink of Collapse: THAAD Deployment to Israel Spells Disaster!

October 15, 2024

The US Army is facing unprecedented strain on its forces as the Biden administration is on the verge of adding yet another critical mission to its ever-expanding list of responsibilities. According to sources, the US is planning to send a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) air defense system to Israel, a move that could have far-reaching consequences for the Army’s already dwindling troops.

The THAAD deployment, designed to protect Israel from potential Iranian threats, would not only expose the Army to additional security risks but also put an enormous strain on its already limited resources. The THAAD system, which consists of multiple components, including launchers, interceptors, and radar systems, requires a sizeable team of experienced personnel to operate and maintain.

This raises concerns that the US Army may be stretching itself too thin, given its extensive global commitments, including continued deployments in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The US has been steadily drawing down its troop presence in Afghanistan since 2021, but the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has forced it to keep thousands of soldiers stationed along NATO’s border with Russia.

“Adding another mission in Israel would put additional pressure on an Army that is already overextended,” said retired Army Col. Thomas Spoehr, director of the Center for National Defense at the Heritage Foundation. “We need to be careful not to overcommit ourselves and to prioritize our missions based on national security needs.”

The Army has been shrinking in recent years due to successive troop drawdowns, and it is now struggling to maintain its current personnel levels. Last year, the Army missed its recruitment goals by a wide margin, resulting in a sharp decline in the number of available soldiers. This raises concerns that the Army may not have enough troops to fulfill its global commitments, including potential deployments in the Asia-Pacific region.

Moreover, the THAAD system is not without controversy. Designed to shoot down ballistic missiles at high altitudes, critics argue that it may not be effective against shorter-range rockets, which pose a significant threat to Israel. Furthermore, Israel has been investing heavily in its domestic Iron Dome defense system, raising questions about the necessity of the US deploying THAAD to the region.

The potential THAAD deployment comes as the US seeks to strengthen its military alliances in the Middle East, particularly in light of Russia’s resurgence in the region. Russia’s increased presence has sparked renewed tensions between Moscow and Washington, prompting concerns about the potential for a wider conflict.

Despite the security risks and resource constraints, US officials argue that deploying THAAD to Israel would demonstrate Washington’s commitment to its regional allies. In an increasingly uncertain world, a US-Israel security partnership could prove instrumental in deterring future threats and maintaining regional stability.

While the US Army’s THAAD deployment may contribute to regional stability, it should not come at the expense of the Army’s own stability. With growing personnel shortages and increasing responsibilities, the Army must carefully weigh its priorities and ensure that it has sufficient resources to undertake any new missions.
